Just started Azathioprine yesterday, taking 40mg of Prednisolone too. Was horrified when doctor said I could be vomiting within 2 hour and if so the Azathioprine is not for me... took it yesterday and feeling ok so far, was wondering how soon side effects kick in, I am hopeful that it's going to be ok but suspicious that side effects may creep up. Anyone had experience? Many thanks

Hmm it gave me some nausea but I switched to taking it at night and then I was fine unless I woke up in the night needing the loo, then I felt sick too. Didn't happen for a couple of days either so I guess i was at the low end of the side effects range.

Hi
I had an adverse reaction to Azathioprine. It took about a week of taking it before I ended up in hospital. It started by me feeling sick, then stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea and then bad back pain where I could couldn't stand up straight. I'm sure this is a rare event, so try not to worry.

Hi, I just today came off the azathioprine cos of side effects, severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, about 4 hours after i take it. This only developed after 4 weeks of treatment though, which made my docs say it wasn't side effects and i should continue taking it. This has consequently made me very angry, as it is obviously the aza, as today i haven't taken it and for the first time in a week i've been able to eat something!

Thank you all for your replies...I've started azathioprine, only been 3 days at a tiny dose so I'm still unsure, no problems so far but dose going up next week so I'll expect whatever! Will keep posted. I appreciate all your help.

I had really bad side effects with Azathioprine. Like others, really bad back pain, vomiting and severe diarrhea. I managed only 3 days before I refused to take any more!

After a few days Aza knackered me out, felt like i was heavily stoned all the time and couldn't function, then had mercaptopurine (worse) and made me vomit, horrible drugs, if only steroids were good long term, i can cope with massive face syndrome!!

Been taking Azathioprine for just over 2 weeks now, doing ok considering the list of side effects but it makes me feel at times really weak and fatigued (in contrast to the sleepless nights with the pred!) I take it at lunch time and am wondering if I should take it at bed time instead...Anyone have any similar experiences or advice?  Many thanks

I take mine at night because it leaves me very weak and wobbly. Like Oli it does give me back ache but so does the crohns! I use a heat pad to help with the pain. Hope this helps.

Hello again, bit of an embarrassing question but here goes.... On my third week of Azathioprine and dose up to 100mg which is max for my weight... I have got so much wind!!! Feel bloated all the time and just can't stop breaking wind (trying to be tactical with my subtle wording there!)  taking it at bedtime to try and avoid the wobbly, exhausted feelings but awake most of the night contributing to the ozone problem!  Anyone suffered similar?  Still taking 40mg of Prednisolone which isn't in my opinion doing very much except of course giving me that endearing moon face!  I'd appreciate any advice or to hear if anyone has experienced similar windy problems, will it go away?????????????????? Many thanks to you all.
