I am currently taking Methrotrexate and have been for almost three years! I am after long term treatment which is safe! so in the next fews years i can start a family. I am trying to research but at the moment it's not sinking in. I have been ill half my life with this illness and have been on Prednisalone, Pentasa slow release and methrotexate. I am planning on making an appointment with my IBD specialist to talk about medicaton etc, but if i do my research it might help me choose at the time.
Please can you help with others safe long term tablets for crohn's! Many thankx

Hiya,

I was on mercaptopurine when i fell pregnant and my daughter was born completly healthy just had scans to make sure her growth was not stunnted and she was far from small when born. Im sure the doctor said something about azaphioprine being safer when pregnant hope this helps

I just met a lady who is pregnant in the clinic, she says her Crohn's has behaved completely while she has been pregnant, so good luck.

Hi,
My Crohns was really well behaved whilst pregnant...but you hve to be careful after having baby, all the hormones flying round and the physical demand of being a new mum can cause a flare up (this is what happened for me unfortunatley). Azathiaprine is supposed to be safe during pregnancy, as are steroids. I think Pentasa is too, but only up to a dose of 1g BD. When I was put up to 2g I was told I had to stop breastfeeding, so I'd imagine its the same in pregnancy.

hth!
